چکیده

We report five new measurements of central black hole masses based on STIS and WFPC2 observations with the Hubble Space Telescope and on axisymmetric, three-integral, Schwarzschild orbit-library kinematic models. We selected a sample of galaxies within a narrow range in velocity dispersion that cover a range of galaxy parameters (including Hubble type and core/power-law surface density profile) where we expected to be able to resolve the galaxy’s sphere of influence based on the predicted value of the black hole mass from the M–σ relation. We find masses for the following galaxies: NGC 3585, MBH = 3.4+1.5 −0.6× 108 M ; NGC 3607, MBH = 1.2+0.4 −0.4× 108 M ; NGC 4026, MBH = 2.1 +0.7 −0.4× 108 M ; and NGC 5576, MBH = 1.0 +0.5 −0.3× 108 M , all significantly excluding MBH = 0. For NGC 3945, MBH = 9+17 −21× 106 M , which is significantly below predictions from M–σ and M–L relations and consistent with MBH = 0, though the presence of a double bar in this galaxy may present problems for our axisymmetric code. The Masses of Black Holes in Active Galactic Nuclei

Reverberation mapping methods have been used to measure masses in about three dozen AGNs. The consistency of the virial masses computed from line widths and time delays, the relationship between black hole mass and host-galaxy stellar bulge velocity dispersion, and the consistency with black hole masses estimated from stellar dynamics in the two cases in which such determinations are possible a...

The black hole mass of low redshift radiogalaxies

We make use of two empirical relations between the black hole mass and the global properties (bulge luminosity and stellar velocity dispersion) of nearby elliptical galaxies, to infer the mass of the central black hole (MBH) in low redshift radiogalaxies. Using the most recent determinations of black hole masses for inactive early type galaxies we show that the bulge luminosity and the central ...

A new way to measure supermassive black hole spin in accretion disc-dominated active galaxies

We show that disc continuum fitting can be used to constrain black hole spin in a subclass of narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) active galactic nuclei as their low mass and high mass accretion rate means that the disc peaks at energies just below the soft X-ray bandpass. We apply the technique to the NLS1 PG1244+026, where the optical/UV/X-ray spectrum is consistent with being dominated by a standar...

Supermassive black holes from OASIS and SAURON integral-field kinematics

Supermassive black holes are a key element in our understanding of how galaxies form. Most of the progress in this very active field of research is based on just ∼ 30 determinations of black hole mass, accumulated over the past decade. We illustrate how integral-field spectroscopy, and in particular our OASISmodeling effort, can help improve the current situation.

Black hole masses from power density spectra: determinations and consequences

We show that the X-ray power density spectra do not simply scale linearly with the mass of the black hole over many decades. Nevertheless, the high frequency tail of the power density spectrum can be successfully used for determination of the black hole mass in an AGN if another AGN is used as a reference. We determine the masses of the black holes in 6 Broad Line Seyfert 1 galaxies, 5 Narrow L...
